Dick was shooting color in New York in the 1980's before it became fashionable. In a stroke of good/bad luck in 1987 his Leica M4P was stolen. An insurance payment allowed him to replace it and to buy a Leica R4S SLR to shoot color whilst also shooting black and white. The resulting color work lead to a show with Bruce Gilden and Tom Arndt at Film in the Cities Gallery in 1987.
Encouraged by the show Dick took to the streets of China, Vietnam, Japan, and Paris. He also received a grant to photograph in the Twin Cities.
The work here is a result of those efforts as well as previous work in Kenya and black and white shot in New York City.
